Garissa County has issued a warning over an
impending drought that will sweep across the region just two days after
the World Bank issued an alert warning of an imminent drought that will
affect several African countries, Kenya included.
Pastoral areas that have been identified to be hard hit are Dujis, Modogashe, Balambala, Ijara, Dadaab and Liboi.
Garissa
County Commissioner Rashid Khator, while addressing the media, noted
that was only recovering from flood related losses estimated at Sh1.2
billion with about 30 per cent of its residents already caught up in the
escalating drought.
In a report titled ‘Africa’s
Purse’ released in Abuja, Nigeria, the World Bank said a terrible
drought will ravage several African countries between now and 2018.
Dr.
Mohamed Keinan, the Garissa County Coordinator, National Drought
Management Authority blamed the delay of the short rains expected to
start from early October as being behind the worsening drought
condition.
He said his office was working with the
national and the county government to offer help to those who will be
affected by the impending drought by providing water.
If
there will be no rains in the next few days, he said the situation
could be even worse as water resources and pasture are dwindling by the
day.
